Case Study: Tytology

Case Study: To develop a unique mark for a market research company featuring reference to an owl.

The Design process:

* Sketches were made to brainstorm a rough concept.

* A circle was drawn with a bold outline

* A circle was placed inside to stand for the pupil.

* A quarter section of the pupil circle was removed to depict a pie chart to give reference to market research data.

* The whole image was replicated and laid on top of the right outline of the existing eye.

* A larger circle was placed on top of the left eye and made transparent to view the image in the layer beneath and a section of the circle was cut to deduct from the right eye. The same process was applied for the left eye. This method gives flow and the impression of a mobius strip - which might signify ongoing market analysis.

* Once the concept was in place and confirmed to me pleasing to the eye, the right eye was deleted and the left was replicated and flipped twice. This ensured that each side of the image was even with the same width gaps.

Case Study: 91 Seconds on Film

The Brief: Develop an identity for a company who specialize in broadcasting 91 second film / movie reviews on radio.

The Design Process:

* Type was swapped, rotated and flipped until a projector-like shape suddenly took form.

* The two characters were joined and the shape was sealed at the bottom (left in logo) to portray the projector funnel.

* Clean sans type was used for the full company name beneath and a wide kern was employed to let the logo breathe and emphasize the mark.

Additional Notes:

The idea came about whilst analyzing type shapes to try and tie them in with film. Fortunately a solution jumped out at me instantaneously after selecting this particular typeface.

Case Study: imeow

The Brief: To design a logo for a pet store featuring a cat with a hand drawn appearance.

The Design Process:

* Rough sketches were made using pictures of cats as source material.

* A custom brush was created with a pinch at either end.

* Individual strokes were made with the brush to create the rough outline of the cat.

* The pen tool was used to develop "strokes" with greater precision.

* The stroke pieces were re-arranged slightly and resized until the cats body looked pleasing to the eye.

* The cats eyes, nose and mouth was drawn with the same brush with each element re-arranged several times to experiment with different facial expressions which ultimately dictated the feel of the overall logo.

* The cat was coloured with a watercolour brush with subtle colour detailed added to eyes, ears and body.

* Shadow elements were added

* A ball of wool and extended "arm" was drawn and coloured.

*Type was traced and kerned. The tittle of the "i" was erased to be replaced with the ball of wool and "TM" was added.

Additional Comments:

The ball of wool standing for the tittle of the "i" was a concept which came about near the end of the project. It was too nice an idea to leave unexplored. The cats body was adusted slightly and the cats "arm" was added. The overall idea was for it to appear that the cat was placing the wool in position or playfully pulling it away.

This logo was created with a mouse.

Case Study: Southeastern Music

The Brief: To develop a logo / business identity for a music store.

The Design Process:

* A sketch was formed during the brainstorming process.

* A variety of fonts were selected and whittled down to a narrow font which subtly represented the curves of a typical electric guitar.

* Type was divided and kerned.

* A "tagline" was added after whittling down to an appropriate sans serif font.

* The electric guitar body (Gibson Les Paul) was traced from a source image with pickups, volume / tuning pots and selector switch highlighted.

* The "h" was divided into parts and the stem was extended downwards and upwards to represents the length of the guitar neck.

* The body of the guitar was applied to the bottom of the "h" stem and machine heads were added to the top of the "h" stem.

Additional Comments:

The first design featured a Gibson Les Paul guitar head but the peak of the "h" stem worked much better as it fitted with a typical rock guitar design and naturally flowed with the font style.

This logo was awarded Logo of the Day today (on 03/08/10).

Case Study: Bioregions

The Brief: To create a logo for a company dealing in profiling and expanding environmentally friendly practices worldwide.

The Design Process

* Sketches were made during the brainstorming process.

* A leaf image was developed.

* A circle was drawn.

* The leaf was replicated several times and each was reduced or enlarged as the pieces were fitted together using the circle as a guide as I neared the edges.

* The guide circle was erased and the green leaves were coloured into "regions". with the gray leaves representing the sea and non-green areas of the planet.

* Simple, attractive sans serif type was applied with bold treatment given to "bio" for emphasis after dividing and kerning.

Case Study: Is she smiling?

An organically produced pixel logo - a design trend of 2010.

The Brief: A fun, experimental logo design with the goal of discovering how few squares / pixels could be used whilst keeping the image recognisable.

The Design Process

* A grid of squares were placed over the source image.

* Each square was carefully colour matched and tweaked to the medium colour behind the square on the source image.

* Once colouring was complete squares were whittled down to the face resulting in an 8 x 8 grid.

* After sampling various script fonts the satire artist signature / hint was added.
